I want to be clear: DeepSeek is basically garbage, just like OpenAI. It's just less expensive, smaller footprint, less ecologically suicidal garbage.
And all of that matters! If a prompt cost as much energy as an internet search, the moral problems would be reduced. The ethical problems (training) would remain, as would the emptiness and unreliability of the tech.

The only good thing about DeepSeek is that it exposes "The Emperor's New Clothes". It shows that slightly better garbage than OpenAI can be cheaper and less resource hungry. Hopefully it will burst the "AI" bubble (scare quotes because it never was AI seeing that LLMs exhibit no intelligence whatsoever). I hope that it will be a wakeup call that the whole direction of LLMs is a dead end.
