As you've probably noticed, for now we've discontinued our posting here on our Mastodon profile due to it being a fairly significant burden for how few people it reaches.

It's possible we may return if we can more easily mirror posts from another site. There is allegedly a bridge available at @modrinth.com@bsky.brid.gy, but BridgyFed seems to have issues.

For now, our main presence and where we'll engage is over on Bluesky @modrinth.com

@modrinth@floss.social @modrinth.com@bsky.brid.gy what burden is there extra to posting on fedi? It seems like it's the same amount of effort as posting to bsky, considering you're not running your own instance

@Chloe primarily, we post a lot of images with our weekly featured projects posts and our Mastodon instance floss.social requires alt text on all images. We post with alt text on Bluesky, but doing that for every single platform is too much of a hassle, and we've been given multiple strikes for not providing sufficient alt text here.

We could certainly switch to another instance or run our own ideally, but all that just adds to the burden for such a little benefit from what we've experienced

@modrinth It's understandable but i am wondering since when it's forced to use alt text at all times?

Also i am pretty sure there are apps that post your posts automatically in every social media connected to it, can't recommend one in particular cos i didn't use any but they exist.

@Azarilh it's specific to our instance, floss.social

@Azarilh the irony that I forgot to put alt text on this image at first...

@modrinth That is funny. And yea i understand. I managed like 5 to 6 social media for someone for some time, uploading images with alt text to all of them. It is tedious, i don't recommend it. But tbh i didn't do it for long so i didn't bother to look into the cross posting apps.

And an obvious questions comes to mind which is why not change instance?

@Azarilh could certainly do that, but it's my understanding profiles do not transfer over well on Mastodon and it's always possible for an instance to stop operating or become undesirable again.

The best option would be to host our own, but that has even higher maintenance burdens than just putting up with whatever instance we've settled on

@modrinth That's why i never recommend to go to like "hobby hosted" instances. I just advertise mastodon.social directly. Ran by an actual company that will treat the instance properly. I know nothing about floss.social so ima not comment on that.

@Azarilh FWIW, there are plenty of "actual companies" that also value and prioritize inclusion of people with disabilities.

@admin Thank you for pointing that out. /s

Forcing people to add alt text on everything will turn people away like you can see here. I think it's reasonable to expect people being a bit too tired or forgetful some times. We have the hashtag #ALT4me to help each other out too. Unfortunetely our society doesn't have a culture of using alt text, so using the hashtag can help people learn how to use them ( what to write ).

I am disabled and so is my partner, FYI.

@admin Despite all i still find it silly to leave because of that, i'd prefer to learn and get used to using alt texts, which is what i did, but i can't blame others for this to happen either. We need to educate people how to do it.

@Azarilh Absolutely, we agree, and also take that approach here. The Alt4Me hashtag is always a great idea. Despite what was suggested above about "multiple strikes", their account only ever received a single "friendly reminder" about the policy, last October. We think our approach is quite successful:

@Azarilh Here is the text our system sends people. We do improve the wording occasionally based on feedback, but it has been unchanged for a a couple years.
