Toot

Talking with a mate today who has two little ones (kids under ten) about how I used the to be the short kid in class until I was, like, 12 or 13, then shot up in height "Wow, but you're over six foot now!"

I'm not - I'm nearly 5ft 11 to be fair, but often get mistaken for "6 ft" - usually by women.

I've always put it down to being lean - like, being thin, it makes me appear taller, or the way I dress (close-fitting clothes to follow my body shape)

Hm.

"Nah, not quite. I'm just over an inch away from six foot. Pisses me off lol, I'm so close!"

"But, Lee was 6ft, and you're a little taller! And Gavin too!"

(Lee was an ex of theirs, shorter than me. As was Gavin)

Ahhhhhh!

My perceived height has bugger-all to do with my lean-ness, or how I dress, or my silhouette, or anything, has it?

@neonsnake Interesting! So that's basically the male equivalent to women lying about their age?

@searchparty Yup.

If you're male and 5ft 10 to 5ft 11, then you're "six foot", because "six foot" has a certain...thing...about it.

Which, like, okay?

It's not like at 5ft 11 I can't reach a top shelf, I don't need the extra inch or so.

I do get it, but I never felt the urge to lie about my height; I was visibly tall enough to be asked to get stuff from high shelves anyway lmao

@neonsnake I always have to convert into metric, but interestingly, the converter also gave me a table for "average male height". (Hello, anyone following me around the internet?)

You're one inch above average for the UK and perfectly standard for most of Europe. Only Dutch men are 6 feet on average, apparently? The data is for 19 year old boys, though. And teenage boys have gotten freakishly tall recently, at least from my very short female perspective. ;)

@searchparty interesting - for some reason I had "5ft 9" as the average male height.

I'm - anecdotally - taller than average, as in I'm taller than most fellas I am in contact with, and am used to the "oi, tall boy, can you reach this for me please?"

That said, I'm thinking of fellas of plus/minus 15 years of, say, being 50 years old, not necessarily 19 year olds lol
