@harriorrihar A colorful city going down a vertical tunnel among rocks in the desert. The artstyle is cel-shaded, the buildings are piled on top of each others and their highlights are salmon and turquoise colored

@Tudwall

I don't usually put Alt text because it makes scraping easier for AIs, basically Alt text is a prompt. I know that this won't prevent me from losing my job, but I don't want to make it easy for those people who treat us with so much hate and contempt. If I put the two reasons on a scale, I know which one has more weight for me, because the images I share don't have valuable information for a blind person, and honestly, a blind person has never asked me for it.

@Tudwall

Thank you for your understanding, I know that my point of view is not very well received. 🫥

I had an account to spread art @Solarphunk and I ended up closing it for that reason

@harriorrihar @Tudwall I suppose you could add this explanation as Alt text? It makes a lot of sense.

Yes, I think it's a good idea!

I did do this on @Solarphunk , but every post would turn into a debate, and I don't think it was respectful to the artists I was sharing.

@harriorrihar I understand the fear of AI, it is pretty terrifying, and it's also true that as beautiful as your art is, it doesn't hold any critical information. I dream of a better world without AI scraping and where instead AI is used for accessibility :/

@harriorrihar @Tudwall can understand, but it means I'll never be able to repost those posts, as a good portion of my following is visually impaired

@harriorrihar @Tudwall the only thing I'd like you to consider is that for the AI is very easy to make a prompt from an image, both if you provide it or not doesn't change much. In any case I will still support you as your stance is more than understandable

@martinligabue @Tudwall

Well, data quality is important for AI, AI generates synthetic data, and a precise or accurate human description can make all the difference. And of course, it doesn't matter much at this point, I've been warning about this phenomenon since 2018, and here we are, at a point of no return. That doesn't mean I'm going to give up, we'll find a niche and a solution to the problem, but right now the networks are the enemy.

@harriorrihar @Tudwall this is exactly why I always hesitate to put an alt description on my images - it sadly seems more likely it’ll be used for training purposes than it would be for accessibility reasons.

I honestly end up doing it mostly out of a sense of peer pressure here.

Alt text is useful for journalism, and news is not copyrighted. It pains me to say it, but I'm sure that in the case of art, Alt text has been used a lot for scraping, and it has had little impact on accessibility, beyond a few specific cases.

@harriorrihar @forty2 @Tudwall this is a bad and harmful take, and there are quite a few people who like to differ.

However, don’t use the bots. Describe the pictures yourself. Emphasise not only what is depicted but also why it’s worth looking at, and those small details that make it brilliant. #AltText has massive impact on accessibility.

@harriorrihar @Tudwall What makes you think visually-impaired users wouldn’t be interested in what you’re sharing? Alt-text doesn’t just have to be a straight reproductive description of what it contains, it can be something that explains the mood or intent or carries on the content of the post in some related way. From what I’ve heard, that kind of alt-text is actually preferred.

@dmcgk @Tudwall

Well, I don't really know. I've been on the Internet for 20 years and no blind person has ever asked me for a description. However, I can tell you that dozens of prompters have written to me to ask me about a classification or a style in the last 2 years. Or even bots that left an automatic description of the illustration in a comment. I have also been able to read descriptions of my work in databases.
