Has “overwhelm” always been a noun and I’ve missed it???

Twice this week I’ve seen something like the construction: “This is an experience that can cause overwhelm.” …and it feels odd. I’d never write it that way (I’d go: “this experience can lead to being overwhelmed…”).

I think it’s migrating into noun-dom in order to name it as an emotion among emotions: e.g. sadness, anger, overwhelm. …but I find it jarring.
