Working with a student, and we're trying to research for a project. Wow, research is so much harder these days, especially knowing what sites to trust and then trying to type the right combination of words to get valid and useful sites. I don't envy students these days.

@Mendi_Tech exactly if you don't ask the right question all you get is garbage. it used to be way easier

@gtbray @Mendi_Tech I completely disagree, with all respect. Research, at least for me, is far easier than it was.

@Bruce @Mendi_Tech now that the AI is getting in to the act you have to dig deeper to get answers.

@gtbray @Bruce @Mendi_Tech There, I agree. Search engines are less useful by the day. However, databases are still quite useful. How long that will last, though, is an open question.

@techsinger @gtbray @Mendi_Tech Search engines are still very useful, as long as you approach every set of search engine results with a healthy does of skeptisim, always follow the money, and unless a source is extremely trustworthy, always look for another.

@Bruce @gtbray @Mendi_Tech Granted. Those are some of the many new skills you need. All the problems those skills now solve were less annoying in the days of paper, and even in the days before AI.

@Mendi_Tech @Bruce @techsinger @gtbray I hat3ed research papers when I was in high school. Just couldn't access any information on my own. So annoying. Now, I could do kick butt papers... and have, because it's all there at your fingertips. You don't need to depend on some other human on for your info, or outdated books.

@mcourcel @Bruce @techsinger @gtbray The trick is digging around enough and finding the right key words to make sure what you are getting is legit.

@Mendi_Tech @mcourcel @Bruce @gtbray Undoubtedly, but now you can do that yourself. You don't need to schedule things, ask for help, have people not show up, have people promise to send you things and then fail to send them...

@techsinger @mcourcel @Bruce @gtbray I know that. But, for a sophomore to have to try to come up with just the right wording to find anything is a bit stressful. Yes, less stressful than requiring sighted assistance, I think, but i can see why they want to just call it quits.

@Mendi_Tech @techsinger @mcourcel @gtbray The way I see it, it's character-building. I'm not being glib here. We have the ability to do now what I never dreamed of being able to do when I was in school. And because of that, we now have to work for our research instead of having others do the heavy lifting for us. It's just another skill, and one which most people are perfectly capable of acquiring, blindness alone has nothing to do with it.

@Bruce @techsinger @mcourcel @gtbray Well, then I guess I lack character. Call me the village idiot. I tried my damnedest to help her, and even I couldn't come up with the right combo of words to get her what she wanted. Apparently, I don't try hard enough either. Good thing I don't have an actual career in academia. I'd fail spectacularly.

@gtbray @Mendi_Tech @Bruce @techsinger @mcourcel Everything's easy if you know how to do it. Seems you're almost expected to be born knowing how to do everything these days.

@Fragglemuppet @Mendi_Tech @Bruce @techsinger @mcourcel exactly and it isn't always that easy for some not everyone is born a genius
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from gtbray@mstdn.ca
@gtbray @Fragglemuppet @Mendi_Tech @techsinger @mcourcel No, not everybody is born a genius, but the ability to come up with correct search terms and so on transcends blindness. When I was in school, we were shut out from doing keyword searches of any kind. The closest I got was when I could ask the Department of Education for a specific volume of the Worldbook Encyclopedia, then wait several week to a month or two for them to ship the machine and the appropriate volume to me.

@Bruce @gtbray @Fragglemuppet @techsinger @mcourcel Thing is, I can search all day for tech issues, but this here, yes, I could find wikki and other such not acceptible as being sited things, but not much else.

@Mendi_Tech @Bruce @gtbray @techsinger @mcourcel Bit off-topic, but what tech are they using? I've been out of the loop for a while, lol. Payed out of pocket for a BT Speak but think I made the wrong decision.

@Mendi_Tech @Fragglemuppet @Bruce @techsinger @mcourcel oh that's good. i remember when they were introducing it at CSUN and i asked if it could support a keyboard. the answer was certainly rude and i walked away never to buy one.

@gtbray @Fragglemuppet @Bruce @techsinger @mcourcel I quite frankly don't think much of the device either, but people are still getting them and need training on them. So, there we are.
