Working with a student, and we're trying to research for a project. Wow, research is so much harder these days, especially knowing what sites to trust and then trying to type the right combination of words to get valid and useful sites. I don't envy students these days.

@gtbray @Bruce @Mendi_Tech There, I agree. Search engines are less useful by the day. However, databases are still quite useful. How long that will last, though, is an open question.

@techsinger @gtbray @Mendi_Tech Search engines are still very useful, as long as you approach every set of search engine results with a healthy does of skeptisim, always follow the money, and unless a source is extremely trustworthy, always look for another.

@Mendi_Tech @Bruce @techsinger @gtbray I hat3ed research papers when I was in high school. Just couldn't access any information on my own. So annoying. Now, I could do kick butt papers... and have, because it's all there at your fingertips. You don't need to depend on some other human on for your info, or outdated books.

@techsinger @mcourcel @Bruce @gtbray I know that. But, for a sophomore to have to try to come up with just the right wording to find anything is a bit stressful. Yes, less stressful than requiring sighted assistance, I think, but i can see why they want to just call it quits.

@Mendi_Tech @techsinger @mcourcel @gtbray The way I see it, it's character-building. I'm not being glib here. We have the ability to do now what I never dreamed of being able to do when I was in school. And because of that, we now have to work for our research instead of having others do the heavy lifting for us. It's just another skill, and one which most people are perfectly capable of acquiring, blindness alone has nothing to do with it.

I tried my damnedest to help her, and even I couldn't come up with the right combo of words to get her what she wanted. Apparently, I don't try hard enough either. Good thing I don't have an actual career in academia. I'd fail spectacularly.

@gtbray @Fragglemuppet @Mendi_Tech @techsinger @mcourcel No, not everybody is born a genius, but the ability to come up with correct search terms and so on transcends blindness. When I was in school, we were shut out from doing keyword searches of any kind. The closest I got was when I could ask the Department of Education for a specific volume of the Worldbook Encyclopedia, then wait several week to a month or two for them to ship the machine and the appropriate volume to me.

If you're disabled it's harder to do just about everything, but yet most of us have the same level of physical and mental energy as anyone else, maybe less depending on our disability(s). So it still works out to us being expected to do more.
