Here's another reason open source software is better:
Proprietary software let's incompetent programmers hide their mistakes. It lets malicious companies hide their evils. Open source lets anyone audit the code.
This means those people can learn from their mistakes and be better.

To be clear, I've written tons of horrendous code. I probably still do. But I try to share it so that others can help me learn from it, and it turns into a teaching experience and an opportunity for growth.

@purpleidea I've written my fair share of horrendous code.
No one fixed it, instead people started to build upon it, document it and treat it as example code.
So yeah, open source is great but it's not a silver bullet and certainly not a way to get your code cleaned up by more experienced devs.
