@TimeCycles Oh how excellent!! Just exactly what we need. I see some great choices there -- can't wait to listen to the whole thing!

@TimeCycles
Omg. This playlist. It's so good. Ironically, it's an ode to America. Including the song by the Canadian Joni Mitchell, who is just... [chef's kiss].
At least so far; I'm only about 5 or so songs in. I mean, "Pink Houses" isn't exactly an ode, but "ain't that America."

@tc_morekindness you know, when I listened I thought the same thing. And hey, Canadians write about America as well as anyone (Neil, Robbie) donβt they?
Thereβs a couple in there that arenβt a good representation of the artist (the Jimmy Buffet songs) but I had to stick with the theme :)

@TimeCycles That's right, you don't have to be American to write/sing songs about it. I was just enjoying that rollicking Rod Stewart song about the bayou. :)
But so much of the playlist (I'm still listening) is country "roots" music... Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Howlin Wolf, Loretta Lynn... It's like the Gulf kinda pulls from the heart of America. Maybe that's because the Mississippi goes right down the middle to the Gulf.

@tc_morekindness yep, thatβs why they call it the Delta Blues. I guess most of these artists are from Gulf states - Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana especially.

@tc_morekindness suddenly, for reasons I cannot explain, thereβs some part of me that wants to go to Graceland.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from TimeCycles@mas.to
@TimeCycles Yes, that would be something. I've never been. Hey, you're friends with Col. Tom Parker -- or was it somebody who worked for Tom Parker that you chatted with in the movie theater?

@tc_morekindness I forgot about him. Yeah, I would like to go to Memphis but Iβd want to have a tour guide.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from TimeCycles@mas.to
@TimeCycles I bet we could come up with a Graceland playlist. Paul Simon's "Graceland" and Marc Cohen's "Walking in Memphis" to start. I'm sure there are others.

@tc_morekindness Johnny Rivers wrote a great one too

@TimeCycles ??
I just googled it. Oh that's a great song.

@TimeCycles I was thinking about that. Loretta Lynn, coal miner's daughter, was from Appalachia (TN? KY? WV?). Where were Johnny Cash and Hank Williams from? Thinking about Johnny Cash, I started singing "Jackson" in my head. "We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout." Does that mean he was from Jackson, MS? (I'm thinking out loud, of course. I could google it, and probably will.)

@tc_morekindness and Hank was born in Alabama.
If you havenβt seen it, check out Ken Burnsβ Country Music. Sad what happened to it in the 80s. βBroβ country sucks.

@TimeCycles I saw it. I liked it so much I saved some episodes on my DVR, thinking I would rewatch -- but it's been several years now.

@tc_morekindness if youβre a pbs contributor you can access it all on their app.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from TimeCycles@mas.to
@TimeCycles That's good to know. I'm not currently a contributor, but I should be. Also, a ton of stuff like that is available through the public library's digital resources. IDK about that series, but some other Ken Burns stuff is. As well as shows like "Finding Your Roots," which I also love and which is taking up room on the DVR lol. I've been wanting to cut myself loose from Dish for years, but I can't bc of everything on my DVR (which I will likely never watch). π

@tc_morekindness tell me about it, itβs like bookmarks on here and my browser. How often do I return to those?
A lot of the pbs stuff is available on Kanopy too. I want to give to pbs though, especially since finally getting rid of my YouTubeTV sub.
Iβm done with grifters like Scarborough. Free at last!

@TimeCycles π I know what you mean. The struggle is real. Yeah, I think it was Kanopy that I could access through the public library where I saw a lot of good things. Actually, a friend of mine is a filmmaker, and I found her ex-girlfriend's documentary on Kanopy, surprisingly.

@TimeCycles
I often wonder if Joni knew how much her music would mean to us when she was writing it...
The Battle of New Orleans hit me funny, not ha-ha. Remind me to tell you why--when I'm not so exhausted.
In the meantime, thank-you for this. I look forward to listening to some old favorites and learning a few unfamiliar to me.
It will always be the Gulf of Mexico, to me.

@wren Battle of New Orleans was one of my favorite songs as a kid. I think we had the 45 of the original version.
