1. install ollama

2. download deepseek (e.g. the 8b version that weighs just under 5GB): ollama run deepseek-r1:8b

3. (optionally, requires docker) run a local ui to have a pleasant interface with the model:

then you can go to localhost:3000/ and chat without anything leaving your computer or any servers gobbling resources
