I wonder if they'll show it as that for all English maps or just when viewed from the country that appropriates the name of two entire contents?
Google weirdly label Al Aqsa as "dome of the rock" even when viewed from Australia, I never hear anybody actually call it that.

@kmpiw@infosec.exchange @kevinrothrock @kmpiw@mastodon.social it says in the article that local accounts see local names of places and the local names are decided by governments.
(My opinion) It's not up to Google to take a stance on whether they agree with a local name issued by the government or not.

So it will only show as that in the USA? Well only get it changed if the Liberals get in and go batty?
I don't think Google follow that rule fully. I don't remember ever seeing "Occupied Palestinian Territories" on Google maps. https://www.dfat.gov.au/geo/occupied-palestinian-territories I don't think they even show فلسطين as the local name.
Their excuse is probably that it's in two parts, maybe I'll see how Hawaii shows up.

@kmpiw @marcusnordberg @kmpiw@infosec.exchange @kevinrothrock Do you know the country Birmanie ? No. But I as French yes.
Names are political and commercial company reflects government's view.
That the point.
Also Google. They follow Trump. Because it's actual power.

They supposedly show the local name for viewer and location. As I showed in the link, the country I'm in calls it "Occupied Palestinian Territories" so I should see that and فلسطين and I don't think Google Maps shows me that… but I've not checked recently.
The "quick stats" show "State of Palestine" from Wikipedia for Gaza City (Google themselves get no credit or blame for that) … the map shows Israel, Egypt, and… Rafah? it labels the border city but doesn't even acknowledge Egyptian border… maybe zoom…
