Trying to read up on the "seven sisters" original oil companies and so far it's like

Step 1. Oil is discovered

Step 2. A few American companies own all the world's oil

And I'm like wait what did I miss something. Will have to go deeper on wikipedia but I also suspect it's not much more complicated than that 🥲
