Baltimore Transportation Dept is running a survey of driver-pedestrian near-misses to use alongside crash reports in planning safety improvements. https://www.thebaltimorebanner.com/community/transportation/baltimore-interactive-map-near-crash-intersections-XYB4ZO4MTZEJ5MVJIDUW4EJ6DU/?schk=YES&rchk=YES&mc_cid=64e9727c8d

@BenRossTransit

Since near-hits happen more often than actual crashes, this will be really useful in planning safer streets, both in the engineering and in deciding which streets need treatment the most urgently.

I'm involved in building a map like this for my Smalltown USA, in openstreetmap, to be launched soon, so I'm learning from Baltimore's questionnaire. (At least it's shorter than a police report!).

@CelloMomOnCars @BenRossTransit do the buses have cameras? (Ours do; if I report being buzzed by a bus they will look at the recording and .... send me an apology and take action w/ driver...)

@geonz @CelloMomOnCars The Teslas all have cameras, but good luck getting Elon to share the data.

@geonz @BenRossTransit

All joking aside, bus drivers tend to be the safest drivers on the streets.

@CelloMomOnCars @BenRossTransit Ours do so much more. An elderly friend of mine was walking w/ another friend and fell... and a bus going by stopped, the driver got out and was a "first responder" and got her on her feet, asked the questions to make sure she was okay, then got back on the bus...

and I don't ride that often but see them basically doing social work helping people navigate the town and their lives, and treating all kinds of characters with dignity even when saying "you can't change your clothes on the bus."
