You're a taxi driver. You're sent to pick up someone named Simon. You drive up and there's a person with a cane standing on the curb, apparently doing nothing and facing toward the parking lot. Do you:
I feel sometimes like all of humanity is being enshittified.

@simon You are not wrong about this feeling. Is Uber available where you're at? If not them, then Lyft? Something better than a traditional cab? I get a better positive response rate by telling the drivers in the app that hey, blind dude is blind.

@quanin It's not as far as I know, though there is a ridesharing service I haven't tried yet. It's called Uride and seems to be aimed at cities which are just slightly too small to be on Lyft/Uber's radar. It has a lot of accessibility issues though, most notably each autocomplete result in the address list having an auto-generated accessibility label of "search result 0", "Search Result 1", etc. I got ghosted by support a couple of years ago, but maybe it's time to try again. I've had so many taxi drivers recently who barely had enough English to communicate at a basic level, and they're still using the partitions they put in place when the pandemic started, now as a safety measure for the drivers. But it just adds another complication with trying to actually hear the drivers. Their payment terminals are all touchscreen now too. So a couple of accessibility issues I can circumvent with OCR don't seem like much of a loss in comparison.

@simon Oof. Yeah, I'd take the headache that is that rideshare's app over the migraine that is what the taxis over there are doing. I'm sorry.

@quanin Usually taxis are fine and given the apparent demographic of delivery drivers and shoppers around here, I'm not sure the rideshare switch will meaningfully improve communication, but last I checked it's still a bit cheaper, maybe by 15-25%. So worth a try. I just have to remember I have it, and start using it in low-risk situations where I'm not trying to get anywhere on time. This ride home from a chiropractor's office would have been a good opportunity actually. Next time.

@simon Let me guess, it was totally number three. I honestly prefer 1 but 2 works in a pinch though expect me to jump out of my skin because it is loud and not helpful.

@blindbat84 yeah, #2 would not be particularly helpful but it would at least cause me to walk over there. It was definitely #3.

@simon maybe you should start using uber assists, they might, just might be better. unless your like me the other day who had one booked, waited 15 minutes, then the guy canceled when 6 minutes away....the customer would get penalized for this, however the driver can do what they like

@crazydan7 My city is too lame for Uber or Lyft. My understanding was that Uber Assist is more expensive, and at the very least the pool of drivers would be smaller. But any kind of Uber situation is nice because you can text the driver to let them know what to look for. I think my profile has a note on it, but I wasn't the one who called the taxi this time. I do think Uber tracks a driver's cancelations and takes action when there are too many, so I assume drivers have a good reason for canceling. I've heard of some drivers just leaving the trip active but not moving, forcing the passenger to cancel. Other than that rather anoying experience, have you generally had good luck with Uber Assist?

@simon yeah i find it alot more helpful, you might have to wait say an extra 7 minutes but it's worth it especially if your in a big parking lot or something.....you get five minutes waiting time so the driver has time to find you without you being charged, and at least in the UK, it's exactly the same price as an uber X so why not! also, my view is if you don't use the service they'll take it away so makes sense....plus the drivers make an extra 20 percent on the trip rather than uber themselves
