Monday morning. Too much news. Went to bed to someone standing up to the Bully-in-Chief, but seem to have backed down. Gutted.

Hah, so here's a thing. Thought "ah, someone's going to tell me off for using the BBC for news" (with some justification tbf) so popped up to the Guardian (also problematic I know) & found some GOOD NEWS.

Genuinely think this is a great move forward, & the more companies that do it (& do it properly, not 4 really long days, but reduced hours, same pay) the more likely we are to move that way & IMO more free time is a huge boost to health & happiness.

@eclectech oh that is good 😁 I am in one of those places that allow four day week but in the four longer days so I can retain a similar pay to what I had when I was on five days (still paid less though).

I can't imagine how I'd ever cope with returning to a five days week (or how I even managed doing it before!). I get so much more rest and headspace. I'm a huge advocate for a four day week (with normal hours and full time pay).

@allysseriordan I got quite annoyed when the Government started talking about a 4 day week and it turned out that it was the same number of hours. Appreciate it can be a lot better than a standard 5 day week but the evidence for reduced hours / same pay is pretty strong and it's such a positive move.

@eclectech so much. There is such a massive misunderstanding on how working more is not working better. There are also a lot of misgivings about rest. It's like we're not allowed to do it.

So many times in the office, I've wanted to take a walk or just sit out for a bit to clear my head. I can't and yet it would make me so much more productive. After certain tasks, my brain goes mush and needs a reset but somehow that rest is perceived as bad.

@allysseriordan Oh yes. Self determination in the workplace FTW.

I'm lucky and work to deadlines rather than specific times, so as long as they stay reasonable I can have a day where everything is coming together and I do a lot, and others where my brain just goes "nah" and I just leave it.

And there's days like today where someone could stand over me and shout BE CREATIVE DAMMIT and it's just not gonna happen, so I'm getting admin done instead.

@eclectech this sounds like a great way to work.

It so wouldn't work where I am. Most deadline are set in the past when I receive them 😆

@allysseriordan Hahaha! I have had clients like that (had a couple of years like it that nearly broke me back in the day), but seem to have got to a point where everyone I'm working with regularly is sensible. It's made a BIG difference.

@eclectech

That's great on the 4 day workweek - I wish we'd see it more in the US.

Had to laugh a little at the BBC comment, cause I watch it a lot here, it's still so much better than US news outlets.

@cafechatnoir Hehe, it's still better than some here too, but has definitely become a lot less reliable than it used to be. But aye, 4 days weeks could be such a win for so many people.

@eclectech my company has been doing 4 eight hour days (no reduction in pay/benefits) for a couple years now, and it’s been amazing. Productivity seems about the same, and I personally feel more productive. I have Mondays off, and when I sign on Tuesday, I’m actually excited to get back to what I left on Friday.

@eclectech Colombia didn't want military planes bringing deported citizens back home in chains. From what I understand, the US will go back to using commercial and charter flights like they did under Biden. So, it was a win for human dignity of Colombia deportees. And even though Trump is playing it like he won, he did not, in fact, win. The fact that Trump backed down means, to me, that he was talked into it. So now I think there must be at least 1 adult in the room "handling" that man child.

@eclectech Not exactly! The reporting on this has been horrible.

The LA Times has a decent summary, though:

"The two sides rushed into late-night negotiations. Late Sunday, they agreed to a series of conditions and said the flights would resume. The White House said Petro had accepted all of Trump’s terms. Colombia said it had received assurances of the 'dignified conditions' that Petro had demanded."

"The flareup seemed unnecessary to many observers. Colombia has long been one of the United States’ most loyal allies in Latin America, and it has also received hundreds of deportation flights in recent years."

"For Petro, a leftist, the red line appeared to have been the sudden use of military flights to carry out the expulsions. And he objected to Colombian nationals being treated 'like criminals.' It was unclear if the agreement reached would return to the use of civilian aircraft, usually in the form of charters."
