The genre of my WIP leans into hard SF (with one effectively magical element). I think hard SF is a lot of fun if you use real(ish) sci/tech as part of the story but less so IMO if you make your story about the sci/tech. just my preference.

[#]PennedPossibilities 566: What hobbies do you have outside of writing?
Right now, Linux. I never thought an OS could be a "hobby," but here I am, listening to Linux podcasts and following the developments in the FOSS world. I like it because it reminds me of computers from the 90s/2000s, and it's largely apolitical but still rooted in ethics that I like, and that sense that technology ought to be for everyone is an underlying "thing" in my current project.

@orionkidder Given how modular and user modifiable Linux-based distros can be; the Linux Kernel which is the core of all distros does have a lot of hobby potential!
I don't mess around too much myself, however, I will keep abreast of anything newsworthy in FOSS and Linux Spaces. Fedora is the distro I'm currently using and enjoy (mostly due to the Flatpak support right out the gate, and ease of use).

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds I'm on Debian, mostly because it's made to work with Gnome, but I'm contemplating shifting to Gnome on top of something else because as much as I appreciate the extreme stability of Debian, it's also really limiting in other ways: you have to manually install Flatpak, you have to manually give yourself permissions on your own computer, etc.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from orionkidder@writing.exchange
@orionkidder Oh, I know all about Debian! I appreciate that they are so rock solid, but, it's at a cost of being so old. Their packages are so stinky due to age, like a cheese which is out of date!
You do have options, at least when it comes to GNOME on top of something else. I came from Ubuntu (Debian based, but packages are a bit fresher) to Fedora that uses the latest stable version of GNOME. Fresh, rolling release (it's been stable so far with no issues outside its own quirks).
If you need proprietary drivers, there are minimal hoops to jump through...Personally, it took me about 10 minutes to set the proprietary drivers and codecs up!
ZorinOS is Ubuntu-based, but based on my readings on it, it's very user-friendly! The set-up is just as easy as Ubuntu and the interface looks quite nice!
I wouldn't suggest Arch unless you're prepared to work for your installation. It's a very hands-on distro, I'd only recommend it to those who are quite proficient with messing around with Linux.

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds I'm hearing a lot of praise for Fedora. What holds me back is the corporate nature of the organization. I'd rather support a democratic non-profit. It's a lot of factors to consider.
That being said, the difference between Gnome 43.9 and Gnome 47 is only a few features and cosmetic improvements, so I don't feel bereft, and it's not hard to install flatpak on Debian, so even though I wish they'd just pre-install it, my apps are up to date.

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds Like, I get the FOMO on the most recent versions of everything, but unless there's one killer feature I really need, I'm fine with being a little behind. It's not been an issue so far.

@orionkidder Mmm, rolling release isn't always necessary unless your hardware is more recent and needs newer kernels for vital support. Staying on Debian would probably be best in your case if you aren't feeling that you are missing out on anything from recent distros. Their stance on security is pretty good too, but can be considered annoying at times, like you referenced in your response to me.
They might be the closest thing you seek in terms of structure, as they don't have a very corporate feel. However, Debian is built with the purpose to serve the needs of all, being made free for anyone interested in using it. Their non-profit supports projects made by people in the FOSS and Open Source space, they feel like the most wholesome of distros.
Sure they have issues like not having a version that allows for default installs for Flathub and Flatpak, but as you said and as I know...The barrier to access is so minimal, it may as well not exist.

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds Yeah, that's how I landed on them. Partly it was determined by Ubuntu and Mint being the most recognizable, and both of them being Debian-based, but then once I was there, I was like: This is good. This works.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from orionkidder@writing.exchange
@orionkidder Debian did a great job onboarding people with their installer and rock solid distro. Everything works as intended, as it was built for that very purpose. They even made it easy to access all the proprietary stuff that one might need (gamers tend to need non-free drivers for the best performance in games). Apt is one of the best CLI tools that I've worked with when a terminal was necessary.

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds I did not know Debian maintains the APT repositories. That makes me even happier to be using their distro & DE and generally supporting them.
I just wish Nautilus wasn't so under-powered, honestly.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from orionkidder@writing.exchange
@orionkidder Yeah, Debian built APT from the ground up! It shows in how smoothly it works for anything Debian-based as well, as a simple and to the point Command Line invoked tool.
Nautilus suffers from a lot of debuffs on Debian, whereas, Ubuntu and Linux Mint buffs it a bit. Nautilus is debuffed for the sake of all that inner stability that Debian has, if it were a bunker in an apocalyptic setting...The Debian Installation would survive!
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from WanderingInDigitalWorlds@sunny.garden
@WanderingInDigitalWorlds Granted, Nautilus is a design philosophy not a mistake, but there's some basic functionality that I do think is missing. It's a matter of where you draw the line at "basic," of course. The good news is, Debian doesn't prevent me from loading up Nemo or Dolphin, which are both pretty damn good.
Funny thing about APT, what pushed me over the edge in favour of switching to Linux was watching someone type, "sudo apt-get..." and the program appeared. It was like magic.

@orionkidder Yeah, that's the best part about Linux: Change it to something better if you don't like what we gave you. It's a special sauce which has kept me on a Linux Distro. Microsoft could never and would never without a fight in the Waffle House parking lot!
Nemo or Dolphin are pretty good and integrate fairly well on any distro you could use them on.
APT is one of the simplest (but powerful) technomagic spells you can cast, which brings you all the good things from the digital world!

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds I still haven't figured out how to make one of them my default file manager, and Dolphin is throwing up a barrier that means I might end up with Nemo. It's a process.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from orionkidder@writing.exchange
@orionkidder I'm sure there is a way via commands but...Often I notice that often times the DE dictates the File Manager.
Using KDE as your default Desktop Environment might be the key to getting Dolphin to remain your File Manager without issue. It's relatively simple to install a new DE, once you've followed instructions and installed it correctly, you choose to log-in to that DE.

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds Yeah, I know. I did it once with Gnome on top of Mint, just to see if I could.
Thing is, I really like Gnome! It's (to me) such a pleasure to use, so Nautilus' (to me) limitations are really frustrating.

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds (Honestly though, LMDE + Gnome might be my ideal combo.)

@orionkidder Hmm, I feel like KDE+Fedora will be my ride or die. Linux Mint Debian Edition is pretty compelling as they are a shit brick house in terms of stable, GNOME feels limiting sometimes, but it is fairly simple to use!

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds The only thing I don't like about LMDE is that Cinnamon is clunky. It's feature rich. It's, like you said, solid as a rock. I can make it look nice with some work. But Gnome is so god damn pretty, man! And smooth! And simple!
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from orionkidder@writing.exchange
@orionkidder Jolly good! Yeah, it's one of the few pain points in my opinion...File Managers should unplug and plug with ease, if the user correctly entered the right commands, at least in my opinion.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from WanderingInDigitalWorlds@sunny.garden
@WanderingInDigitalWorlds I mean, I get that they're very integral to a DE. The file manager is also the open/save menu, for example. I just wish Nautilus had more features, honestly, but I'll kludge it together somehow.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from orionkidder@writing.exchange
@orionkidder Indeed, file managers are very important to a system; messing with it too much would probably cause too many edge case scenarios without might break installations (which is probably why commands for switching file managers aren't readily available).
Cinnamon isn't the best DE in my opinion, it has a memory leak which hasn't been solved (aside from stopping and starting it again on occasion, a feature they added instead of actually fixing it). LMDE is certainly the best though, without a doubt.
Yeah, there's nothing inherently wrong with GNOME, it's just that I'm a wild child that loves to act up and change it all on a whim; KDE a perfect option for a person like me. 😜
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from WanderingInDigitalWorlds@sunny.garden
@WanderingInDigitalWorlds That seems to be how that works. If you want to be able to radically alter your DE, get KDE! If you want something that's minimalist and functional but has lots of stuff you can bolt to the side, go with Gnome.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from orionkidder@writing.exchange
@orionkidder Exactly, but to add a bit more: The KDE team listens more to user feedback, discarding the stuff that obviously isn't the move and implements the good stuff!
GNOME team is a less reactive to user feedback, and sometimes needs to be slapped into doing the right thing. System76 is building their own DE because they are fed up with GNOME team. However, at least GNOME as a DE works, does the job without flash or great ceremony. For that, I appreciate it!
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from WanderingInDigitalWorlds@sunny.garden
@WanderingInDigitalWorlds All true! I'm very sad that the DE I like the best is made by people who seem to think they just Know Better, regardless of what users ask for. I left Mac because of stuff like that. Alas.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from orionkidder@writing.exchange
@orionkidder Agreed, it's why I would only use a macOS device to manage my iPhone (I'm still trying to justify the purchase of a Mac Mini).
GNOME has that unearned swagger which kinda pisses me off, and it is also why I left Microsoft behind. As they clearly are only listening to shareholders and not actual people that use their OS.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from WanderingInDigitalWorlds@sunny.garden
@WanderingInDigitalWorlds Oh yeah, MS has always been about building a monopoly, and the whole point of a monopoly is that you don't have to do obey anyway: not government, not customers, not employees, not even "the market" themselves. Doctorow says this all the time, but it's not a new sentiment: capitalists hate capitalism.
