Most overrated video game of all time!
Which game do you think really isn't all that?

@shram86 I vote Halo, just because the other 3 are also genre defining and I didn’t want to choose any of them 😂

@cmdr_nova Out of curiousity, why do you think they are genre-defining? What exactly did they do that other games did not?

@shram86 well, that's tricky, cause I don't really think they did a whole lot that games before it weren't already doing
what they did was garner more attention and praise than most that came before them.
people laud half-life as like this genre defining FPS that revolutionized everything, but being from the 90s, I can say that there were actually a lot of games that could take that title that were years earlier
breath of the wild is an immersive open world adventure game, but there have been plenty of those, what BOTW did differently, is that they sort of reinvented the formula to be more "organic" and fun (think mass effect andromeda, and how its open world was really just a chore that acted as a barricade between you and the real story)
Final Fantasy 7 was most definitely not the first JRPG, but for some reason, it is the one that most people talk about when they talk JRPGs that turned their interest
Halo wasn't the first multiplayer shooter, but something about its formula introduced millions to the format who had apparently never even heard of goldeneye or perfect dark, and I think this is the game that eventually spawned the ideas around what we now know as the call of duty franchise

@cmdr_nova Agree with pretty much everything, but interestingly it was Medal of Honor most of those ideas were taken from - regenerating non visible health, two weapons carried, frequent weapon swap for ammo, etc

@shram86 tie for me between halo and breath of the wild, halo imho was just not very good, the ONLY thing that made it stand out was that it was on xbox, and botw was just flat out boring, I don't understand the appeal of crossing vast empty open worlds a lot of newer games push, it just feels like a time sink. The best parts of zelda were always the puzzles and dungeons and it's versions were just crap micro-tastes of that.

@raptor85 Agree with both

@shram86 and I agree on ff7, it's a good game that gets treated as the BEST game simply due to nostalgia from it being the first 3d final fantasy.
I don't know if I'd say half-life is overrated though (I'd reserve that more for half-life 2, which imho was just boring and bland), when half-life came out there was just nothing really like it, sure it has some bad parts but still mostly stands up still today, yet people rarely talk about the first game, almost always about the sequel.

@shram86 basically i think half-life stands up a lot in the same way system shock does, an incredible game for it's time where some things didn't age well coughxencough (though unlike system shock at least the controls aged well)

@raptor85 true about the controls for SS, controls are a huge part of lasting enjoyment of any game - ie the ghost hand controls in BotW making simple puzzles awkward and difficult to solve .
My major issue overall I guess is that there are clearly better alternatives (ie Shogo) that coincidentally didnt do as well

@shram86 I actually had that game too, I liked shogo but imho it was a very different type of game. what made half-life stand out (and still does really) is that it was paced more as a puzzle with monsters as obstacles, and cleverly put together so it really felt like you were escaping a facility, and always had that bleak mildly-horror feel. Shogo was way more of a pure action game and loved it's big outdoor setpieces. It's pacing was weird though, everything was either piss easy or impossible.
