Somehow hadn't fully clocked that Schopenhauer's rooting of all morality in compassion is prefigured by the Pauline Epistles: 'Owe no man anything, but to love one another: for he that loveth another fulfilleth the law' (Romans 13:8). Kind of annoying that we've known what constitutes morality for two thousand years and some people still can't manage it
