An etiquette question from someone with two ears and one mouth: how do you choose what to post and boost here? I try hard to keep it to mountain-related things, because that's the instance I'm on, and it's generally positive. I also enjoy reading about some tech stuff, and masochistically "enjoy" some US politics, because that's where I live. I don't want to inflict those things on my followers, becase I try to be a decent human.
In the old days, you would post to different Usenet channels. Do you create a bunch of different usernames and somehow merge them into a single feed?

@drdirtbag When I became active on the Fedi a few years ago, I had the same question. Over time, it turned out that for me, the answer was "post whatever I want to; people will choose whether to follow me."
I'm using CWs (headlines, basically) quite liberally. This way, people who see my posts get to decide whether they want to read about that thing in that moment. It's just basic politeness - I wouldn't walk into a bar and yell "have you heard about...", so I'm not doing it here either.

@slothrop CWs don’t do much for me, since people don’t seem to post porn or gore here. If it’s something I don’t want to read, I can quickly tell that and just skip it. But CW or no, it still clutters my timeline. (And yes, apparently you can set up lists to combat this, but I haven’t taken the time.)

@drdirtbag Oh, I meant that if you’re unsure whether to post something (which I understood was your original question), you can always do it behind a CW.
Besides, people absolutely do post porn here. And it’s widely accepted, as long as it’s properly CW’d.
