I helped setup up a family member's new bike trainer. They were sold on the app you use giving you workouts, the bluetooth connection adjusts the difficulty. There is no way to manually adjust the difficulty.
I'm a little sad seeing them open the app store to download yet another app. I cringe when they open the app and it requires an account. They signup. They're annoyed when their iPhone suggests a complex password. Because I love them and want them to be safe I say they should use a complex unique password. They say yeah they are. They don't note it in any password manager.
They were told about another app that gamifies riding the bike trainer. They download yet another app. They make another account. This app also connects to the bike trainer.
They are happy it's set up. I'm now thinking that if a third party app can connect to the trainer's bluetooth, maybe an open source app that doesn't require an account or even an internet connection can be made.

@RadicalEdward yes please! it would need to be pretty, have competitive races / leaderboards and structured training sessions. if you want people to switch it needs a strava connection, so you can brag about your workouts.
