It was intended to be a showcase for color television, and he sang directly to the camera with live studio audience. I just saw the third one, from 1967, which guest starred Ella Fitzgerald and Antonio Carlos Jobim
This was his medium, working the crowd, and I never picked up on that amid the chopped and shuffled anthologies.
