actually it wasn't the tuning! i think it's the intonation??? that's what it would be if the strings feel, for lack of better words, far too “loose”? like too easy to fret, to the point i can't play them properly. i suspect this has been caused by temperature or humidity

@hikari whatever it is, you're never fucked (unless something breaks or whatever, but that's unlikely to happen when handled with care)

Almost all aspects of how a guitar is set up are adjustable. Maybe in this case the "action" got too low? That's the distance between the strings and the fretboard, how close they are. You can adjust this height at the bridge.

How it works exactly is slightly different on each guitar, but I'm sure YouTube has tutorials aplenty.

@hikari That said, setting up a guitar can be really tricky, so if you're unsure it's not a bad idea to bring it into a shop and have a pro look at it and set it up for you. This is a service all good music stores provide.

i have been informed this is not what intonation is. i think both the string tension and the string action are out of whack; the height of the strings above the fretboard seems like it's uneven now, but all are too, uh, not-tense

@hikari wife reckons this sounds like nut trouble. Nut is held in its groove at the top of the fretboard by friction, and vibrates constantly with the strings so can shift over time. It might need to be reseated, or adjusted or whatever it is that they do.

Or possibly machine heads are loose and not holding tension.

(I hope I've understood what she was saying correctly and not given bad advice...)
