@AmandaMarcotte I always got the impression that Americans learn more form than substance. Like how Dr. Seuss is apparently considered a great way for children to learn reading & words - but it's only words in their form; the texts are often deliberately meaningless.

Rhyming cats & hats & blocks & clocks & socks teaches you exactly nothing about what words mean - only how they sound.
