how do we tell the story that the fediverse is complex web of instances, and that that is desirable?

(e.g.there is a direct link between the search not returning every result -- independent moderation -- isolating instances of abuse)

this is critical for helping people exit the hegemonies, because there are desires learned from being there that we can't & don't want to recreate

like, I do think there is an imperial vs (neo-)indigenous aspect to this which could be very powerful, but I'm quite worried about appropriation. Could be told using european peoples? Peasants vs (land)lords? Or starwars: Empire vs a patchwork resistance?

in any case, the point I'm thinking about illustrating is that there is a choice between consistency + conformity and complexity + freedom

The European people example is an interesting approach. Or even the European Union? A union of independent entities, with sometimes different and sometimes shared interests. And a provision that you see in first instance what's happening at your virtual doorstep.
