@Edent This is good. Sad to see so many UK based forums and bbs shuttering cause of concern theyll be prosecuted under this.

Not aware of quite analagous legislation here in #Canada (yet), but if we get a conservative majority (as I fear we may in our upcoming election), we're gonna get a version of this, which is horseshit.

@tezoatlipoca @Edent Technically it applies to you in canada if you have a 'significant number' (undefined) of UK users.

In practice there's zero chance they'll be able to enforce that around the world.

@Edent For those outside the UK, this (to over simplify; and pls correct me if I'm wrong) means if you run a web forum, community website or any platform where users can communicate and post to each other, you are potentially liable and criminally prosecutable if one of your users posts something offensive (kid porn, hate speech etc.) There are clauses that cover journalism purposes or reasonable attempts at moderation, but fundamentally it puts a huge onus on small sysops.

@tezoatlipoca no, not quite.

It asks you to assess the risk of that happening and then take proportionate measures.

Run a forum about cheese where most people are civil and you've received no complaints? Low risk, low effort.

Constantly firefighting against harmful content? Higher risk, you need to do more.

@Edent @tezoatlipoca run a small or single user fediverse server? Unfortunately, fuck knows. Am I writing a risk assessment for the fediverse or the local users? (remembering that ofcom classes a visitor as a user).

The legislation says the owner doesn't need to count as a user, but then I'm not the owner of all the federated content.

It's all a mess and I'm just waiting on Neil's guidance before I shut it down and migrate back to .social or something.
