i highly respect how byran huang made a rk3588 laptop from scratch (i know how much work it is), but i wonder if he's never seen what we've been doing over those years / am worried that we still have too low visibility in the world

@mntmn I was thinking the same thing when I saw his post, he doesn’t mention what you do at all, when you could have been a huge source of inspiration and knowledge

@mntmn well you're basically only visible(on mainstream tech news) when you release a new product.

And as a builder if you don't research existing hardware projects but just think "hey let's build xy hardware", projects like mnt, novena et cetera will fly under the radar.

At least that's my guess

@mntmn Honestly, judging by how flashy that video (and the rest of his online presentation) is - I think this wasn't about just having an RK3588 Laptop, it was about building one, the experience, the content, the CV bullet points, the bragging rights. He would have done the same if he did or did not know about MNT

@mntmn I said the same thing while watching the video but I did notice your logo fly by at one point so he's at least looking at your schematics

@mntmn Hope Reform Next could bring more visibility. In my opinion, Classic Reform is more for tinkerer and OSHW enthusiast since its design is highly serviceable but chunky and difficult to move around; but Refrom Next nailed the design for maintaining serviceability also increase portability.

Having a dedicated review unit to send around to Linux and hardware-focused YouTubers for reviews could be a great strategy.

@mntmn ask @geerlingguy to review yours? You're probably way ahead of that idea ;)

@mntmn It’s really hard for open hardware projects to get press, and often the ones that do fail in execution. It doesn’t help that any time/money spent on marketing subtracts from engineering efforts.

One way to get free-ish press among enthusiasts is to encourage and promote “cool hacks” based on your hardware that filter out into aggregators like Hackaday and Liliputing, and even outside of expected channels into specialized domains. This may involve sending tips to writers.

@mntmn

It's my opinion that only nerds like us with appetite for OSHW are aware of MNT computers. The goal would be to reach other populations with MNT hardware by showcasing them with usecases they recognize/want/need. Ars Technica did that a bit by covering the Reform. IMO word about MNT hardware could be disseminated through neightboring communities like homelab communities (the rack MNT would be an ideal vehicule here) and live music/algorave communities (a MIDI FX pedal with a Pocket for example would be a good demo).

TL;DR Demonstrating MNT hardware to other communities than the OSHW enthusiasts we are through dedicated usecases would do much to improve MNT visibility IMO.

@mntmn

Also the MNT Pocket paired with the (hugely) trending Minilab community/projects (see /r/minilab) would surely reach a big chunk of new population and bring them to know the extend of MNT products/project.

@Hello9999901 btw if you ever want to swap tech notes, i'm often around here ^^ i'll need to solve the azoteq EOL trackpad issue very soon. for example, we need to figure out how exactly to create the PCB pattern for their chip in KiCAD.

@mntmn Yeah for sure! I'd love to.

How might I contact you? It's one heck of an honor for you to have even seen it!!

Azoteq's tech landscape also confuddles me. I've been thinking of alternatives like Ploopy's new trackpad, the George Norton Peacock, or something completely different!
