UK data protection regulator. 'Our strategy for levelling the playing field for online tracking in 2025'
FFS. "Online tracking is a part of everyday digital life." <maybe, ya know, surveillance shouldn't be 'part of everyday life'.

Weak & ineffective regulators like the ICO, demonstrate why tech can be more important than law/regulation in protecting privacy online.
Choose tools to block tracking both in browsers & apps where possible. Become familiar with the privacy settings of apps & yr devices

@Privacymatters The ICO now says "freely given consent" includes "consent or pay" contrary to previous interpretations. Looks like yet more corporatist regulatory capture (as with the CMA).
"We recognise that the right to the protection of personal data needs to be balanced against other rights, such as the right to conduct a business. Organisations should be able to conduct business and monetise products or services with the funding models that best suit them."

@Privacymatters There's push back against "consent or pay" in the EU, in contrast to the UK's "support the profits of businesses over the rights of individuals" ICO. Perhaps calling it "pay or consent" makes it clearer this is not free choice, and is more like a holdup.
Regulations, charters and watchdogs are important: privacy, human rights, the protection of the environment etc. are issues that require more than just individual choices and technical fixes.
