Took a practice Fundamentals of Geology exam and got about 45% right. Ouch. But, given that I've been out of school for 20 years and not working in geology for 15, I was pretty happy that I could work through some of the answers I didn't originally know by applying what principles I DID know. That felt good.

@FinalGirl i am positive that there's a lot of highly complex and fascinating stuff that falls under geology, but my brain is just imagining a series of pictures of rocks with captions "what is this rock?" and "what kind of rock is this?"

@miriamrobern the physical geology section is more like “what kind of rock would be described as arkosic?” With answer choices like a type of carbonate” and “a sandstone containing > 25% feldspar.” So sort of, yes.

But that’s one of ten different specialty areas. Others include

-hydrogeolgy (the vadose zone is the unsaturated zone that separates the ground surface from the water table),

-geochemistry (zircon would be dated with U-Pb and not K-Ar techniques because of the low parent material content),

-subsurface mapping (determine the angle and orientation of an aquifer layer using three-point geometry), and

There’s planetary geology, fluvial (river) geology, geochemistry, toxicology and contaminant transport, etc.

It’s actually way more vast than people realize. This is why the exams are so excruciating.
