They donβt mention him in this article but another one of Lynchβs influences, I believe, was Hollywood photographer William Mortensen (whom Ansel Adams called the Anti-Christ). He wrote several books on portraiture, lighting, and darkroom technique.

βThe anti-christ?β Wow. That caught my attention. lol
Adams will always hold a special place in my heart, not only for his light work in Yosemite (My favorite place in the world, which probably just reveals, βIβm not well traveled.β) but also for his conservation/preservation efforts.
MortensenβIβm not familiar with but this thought of his, βImagination is a wayward and willful wench, and when she is on the loose she is not to be held in check by any arbitrary boundaries that divide one medium from another,β makes me want to know more.
Iβm learning a lot from following your account. Thanks for keeping it compelling. It always leads me to something deeper. Found an article and linking it below. You may enjoy it, too. Tho, Iβm thinking, you may have already read it, at some pointβ¦

@wren Yep, that's a good article, thanks. I think I came to his work through googling something like: photography / Jungian archetypes.
I love Adams' work too but I also read in a Walker Evans bio where the author mentions AA's distaste for Evans' view of America. That's fine but seems a bit narrow minded.

Interesting article. This intrigued me:
"Mortensen argued that images should be constructed along certain patterns (the S-shape, triangle and diagonal, among others) which activated the brain's primitive fear response"
I understand the s-shape = snakes, but why would triangles and diagonals provoke fear?

Not sure I agree re: the triangle. That would seem more spiritual and harmonious to me. The Holy Trinity, the trine...

Right. Exactly. I can't think of a triangle-shaped primitive threat that we would have hard-wired into our brains. π€·ββοΈ

Thanks. That's what I was thinking about the diagonal (but lightning doesn't really look diagonal -- it's forked). The triangle association seems pretty weak to me.

Yeah, IDK. Iβm new to this. My guess is because lightning follows the path of least resistance with zig-zag forks jumping on a relative diagonal trajectory when conditions avail? No idea, really. lol
Maybe itβs just because diagonals can be disorienting and hit our brains like a lightning strike? Or is that just me? Hahaha

Aww. π€ That is OK, though you don't sound fried to me. We're halfway through the decade; I'm not holding my breath, but maybe the latter half will be better...

I was thinking of the 9-10 years that started in 2016 (with a brief 4 year reprieve). See how my mind works? π±
You're right, we best not hold our breath. π

Oh yeah, when you put it that way... it has been a rough road we've been on for nearly a decade. Even the "reprieve" included dealing with a novel coronavirus that isn't gone yet. π«€

@wren @TimeCycles I get it. I've been a little out of my comfort zone recently because I've had some dental appointments, and you can't wear a mask at the dentist. My dentist uses air filters, tho, and I was pleased to see one in the endodontist's exam room this week.

You can't wear a mask, no.
But you can request that others in the procedure room with you do. I hope they will. π·
