Another thing I found out from #xiaohongshu is that Chinese people really HATE term Lunar New Year, so please don't say that to them. It's actually "Spring Festival" (chun jie) or "Guo Nian" (passing of a year). In Malaysia we simply call it Chinese New Year. In Hokkien, we call it "xin jia".
I don't know if we're sensitive about the Lunar bit in Malaysia though.

@liztai any idea why?
I always heard to it referred as Chinese new year because there are several prominent new years following a lunar calender (and likely many more local ones)

@zombiecide I didn't read why exactly, but something to do with it being inaccurate as it isn't really about the moon or something lol. And they feel that the West (don't quote me) is trying to water down the origins of the celebration being Chinese.

@liztai the festival is based on the Lunar calendar, and given that chinese in other SEA countries celebrate this same festival, TET in Vietnam, Lunar New Year covers "minorities"
china chinese should grow up, ๅไบบโ ไธญๅฝไบบ

@MadiqIzichi I don't know? Maybe that's the reason because they want to differentiate themselves from the other festivals?

@liztai Iโve been told Vietnamese call it Lunar New Year, and hate the term Chinese New Year. I donโt know about Spring Festival, Iโll ask about that next chance I have.
