Something I don't think I'll ever really get used to is having guys ask if I need help or insist on helping me.
I had to go to the home-improvement store to buy a piece of door framing trim. I only needed a couple of feet, found the one I needed and was gonna cut it. But there was a guy there looking for what he needed also and insisted on doing it for me.
I mean, I guess chivalry isn't dead and all that but it's just kind of... it's an odd experience to have.

I know it feels like an insult when you know how to do these things, but sometimes it’s ok to let someone else help you. Dealing with my husband’s Alzheimer’s has made me appreciate the men in my life who are willing to help me out, especially when I really need it. I think it’s their way of showing they care. Now, if they make you feel bad about yourself, that’s a different deal and Wonder Woman must take them down.

This didn't feel like an insult and admittedly, I'm not nearly as strong as I used to be, so the help was certainly appreciated.
It's just such a weird experience still, even if I've had it happen a few times.

@WrenArcher It's so weird to have other people offer to actually do the hard and gross stuff! I'm not sure if I'll ever get used to it, even if I'm glad to not have to do those things all the time anymore.

@WrenArcher What I can't get over is lingering internalised chivalry.
Wait. I'm an old lady. You're a young girl less than half my age. Why am I holding the door open for you?
Do I think my much greater experience with doors and the opening and closing thereof obliges me to relieve you of the burden of dealing with this (relatively, for you) unfamiliar obstacle?

That’s another thing that is lingering. I mean being a girl of a certain age who was raised to do things like that by my momma, it’s kinda hard to shake.
Especially when it feels like I’m disrespecting her memory in not doing what she taught me.
