This is Variegeau, the pear seller.
A farmer's market has operated in the same plot outside the capitol since the dawn of history; downwind, a stand of pear trees has evolved to present itself as humanoid traders, who barter fruits for vegetal nutrients. They have since grown in number and influence, recently attaining a permanent seat on the mercantile council. Their broad upper leaves have adapted to be sensitive to detecting the market price for fruit; they cycle through pear varieties, accounting for what sold best the year before; they can bloom rapidly to attract customers, and retain knowledge in their root systems to be resistant to drought, flood, and the occasional torch-wielding mob.
All this, despite their being firmly rooted in the ground. This makes them staunch environmentalists, but also ideal providers of child care while the adults shop close by. In fact it is local tradition for new parents to visit the grove and negotiate for an "au pear"
