Toot

i'll admit, i do use threads sometimes.

i figured out my pattern on why. mostly when i want mark to see something or censor something, i post it there.

we all know what i have to say here, so i'm not so much screaming into the void or preaching to the choir as much as I'd just be adding to a doom scroll pile, that i don't want to do.

today i made two posts. one said "life imitates art" with the cartoon from the wapo that the artist quit over side by side with the picture of the tech bros in front fow of the inauguration.

the other was a conspiracy theory that mark only loosened the content moderation after he found out musk planned to sieg heil, since he didn't want the algorithm to brush his competition's hate speech under the rug when that self own would be great anti-marketing for x.

@tychi Does it not bother you that by using it you contribute to its success?

@wim_v12e i'm more there doing research than actively engaging, this is where i actually hang out. as someone building internet things, i do need a pulse on why these platforms are appealing to people.

i deleted my twitter, facebook and google account at the end of 2020 for exactly not wanting to contribute to the success of them, to great personal social detriment. i also wanted the youngerlings in my family to realize that life doesn't end when you're not on facebook anymore and that facebook existing isn't a given.

to be fair, i'm not on twitter at all since the research conclusion was that the algorithm exclusively showed me irritating content and that was before it was x.

@tychi Thanks for the elaborate answer. After I posted it, I thought I'd asked a stupid question. But I was afk so I couldn't delete it.

@wim_v12e no stupid questions-- i did a weird experiment when i deleted all my socials and switched to a graphene os pixel 5a with no google services. my main intake was activity pub, lobsters, hacker news, and associated press for like a year.

it was really trippy talking to people irl, since i had no idea what they were on about, but i liked the conversations since I got to have the most unbiased perspective digging into their digital lives since they didn't care about how boring mine was.

@tychi That has roughly been my digital lifestyle for a long time. I was only ever on Twitter, but even then rather half-heartedly and that stopped about 8 years ago. At that time I moved to the fediverse and never looked back. I don't have an internet-enabled phone and I also don't have a television. Most of my news I get from the radio and via fedi.
