hmm -- hey, various ex-us expats: it might be a good time for us all to gather a bunch of our knowledge regarding how we found our way Elsewhere

it's looking increasingly like whole swathes of folks in all of our various online communities are about to need these kinds of resources

@ktemkin @wmd annoyingly theyโ€™re on mastosoc which means that a lot of queer instances have them blocked

also it seems like much of their MO is โ€œcall us and we will advice youโ€ which is good obviously but they donโ€™t have a knowledgebase for this kind of stuff sadly

would a wiki structure work? i am happy to provide technical support for this

@sam @ktemkin they've done a good bit more as well, group calls and information dumps on fedi.

@wmd @ktemkin hm i probably missed those then (because they are on mastosoc), i stand corrected

still, having this as a knowledge base and not a selection of posts on fedi would be a much better idea imo

@sam @ktemkin yeah, but they would be a good party to get in touch with about it and participate with.

@wmd @ktemkin

We've been trying to do this very thing. We've found there's a lot of misinformation floating about as well, so we're also trying to act as a fact checking center.

We do information sessions, provide 'office hours' you can drop in and get help making individual plans, and we maintain an active blog and YouTube channel with info. We try to use official sources and check things with our staff attorney.

@trans_rescue @wmd

Ah, hi! Let me know if there's anything I can help contribute -- I've just gone through the DAFT process and, while I don't have the background to know how documentation requirements might impact trans folks, I do have recent IND letters that describe their current 'temporary' DAFT process and would be happy to provide input/writing/resources.

@elexia there's a kind of hard situtuation behind this:

lawers have told us that someone choosing to take the label 'immigrant', an 'emigrant' or a 'migrant' can convey intention that can be disqualifying in cases where someone wants to seek non-immigrant residence visas

I don't want to participate in the endemic classism that leads people to separate the terms 'expat' and 'immigrant' --

I'm an immigrant, where I live, and it's a nicer label than being defined by where I came from -- but I also have been told to be careful to use the more flmsily-defined terms when addressing vulnerable folks, less any of it become grounds for visa denial
