The number of people on my timeline uncritically taking stuff from XHS, and going an extra mile to interpret it through USian lens and draw some hugely wild (and missing from the original XHS video!) conclusions about how China is literally heaven, is staggering.
(Just in one the most ridiculous example... multiple someones boosted to my TL a post about how quality of life in China for regular people is so much better than in USA, referring to a video posted by some exceptional upper upper middle class representative with $3k/month income and own house. And when I just couldn't bear seeing this on my TL one more time and replied about how housing is actually not really super affordable in China... they very angrily accused me of pushing an agenda, not listening to Chinese people's voices, argued that the housing is actually very cheap and affordable, and one of their counterarguments was literally a link to XHS where someone just took a look at Numbeo and compared different cities in China and USA there (zero own experiences involved), and these numbeo screenshots were very clearly showing that rent-to-income ratio is literally the same within these USA-China city pairs, while purchase-to-income ratio is 5x worse in Chinese cities (meaning that rent is literally the same burden in China as it is in USA, while buying your own housing is way way more out of reach in China than it is in USA; it literally says that on the screenshots). As a counterargument. Go figure 🙃)
People, start reading your sources carefully at least! And reposters, please read carefully what you repost / boost!
I understand that it's very tempting to discard all the US propaganda against China and treat everything that is posted on XHS as a confirmation that China is a heaven for ordinary people... but ffs, at least consider that your sources have a context!
"The rent in this city is just $300, while we're getting screwed by landlords in USA" is not the flex you think it is when the median income in that city is $600. "Many products and services are 3x cheaper in this city than they are in NYC" yeah no shit sherlock, this is what happens when wages are 5+x lower than in NYC, when minimum wage in NYC is 4x the median wage in that city. These services are cheaper not because China is exceptional but because the PPP notion exists for a reason, which you would know if your knowledge of the world was not limited to US + western EU and now also pieces of China as seen on XHS. And who do you think provides these services and how are they getting paid? Why do you think hairdressers in NYC won't do you a nice haircut for $3 like they do in that shit tier Chinese barely a city, is this because they're too greedy and capitalistic and want to screw you?
I would be less disappointed if you all got duped by Chinese propaganda, but it's not even that, you all are creating this propaganda by yourself, inventing stuff propagandists would never even think about, very helpful!
Thank gods the remaining IT corpos in Russia are too incompetent to create something like XHS that could get traction on the West. I would die inside when everybody would start discussing how life for regular people is great in Russia because the prices are lower than in USA and percentage of people owning a housing is technically at 92.6% (tell me you're US/West-centric without saying that you're US/West-centric) and retirement age for women is just 59 years (and who cares that the basic pension is literally $100/month) and there is universal healthcare (which sucks for everybody who doesn't live in Moscow; also tell me you're US-centric without saying that you're US-centric).
