Apropos of absolutely nothing, I’m looking for the earliest use of the name “Gulf of Mexico” on a map. So far I’ve found examples of “Golfe de Mexique” ca. 1705-1708, with “Golfo de Nueva España“ predating that.

@maproomblog And this map (p.65) from Mercator's Atlas, circa 1595, has "Golfo Mexicano"
