apropos of nothing, today I'm thinking about that episode of Frieren where the titular character discusses legal recognition of magic-users over time. eventually, she pulls out a medallion from some long-forgotten civilization and asks, "is this thing still valid?" and the rest of the cast goes "uhh what"

we legally transition in order to lessen the level of institutional cruelty directed at ourselves, as well as to reduce the amount of gatekeeping we face when seeking medicalized treatment - not because some body of cis people somewhere are the arbiters of Who We Really Are.

we are who we are because we fucking say so. we are real and immutable, governments are fake and transitory.

the sooner we all get on the same page about this, the sooner we can be on the same page about what we're fighting for.
