The end of democracy?

Today??

Yeah ok, I guess you weren't paying attention 24 years ago... or arguably 112 years ago.

But yeah, ok, yesterday we had democracy and today we don't. 👍

@juliewebgirl I think what "no more democracy" refers to is the possibility of there never being a legit election ever again. Remember when Rudy G went and got the source code for those voting machines? "In theory", any number of D votes could be changed to an R and no one will ever know because it won't look like an irregularaty at the system level. So, if that is true, it doesn't matter if people vote or who they vote for.

@JPZ

Oh wow. Ok...

And that's not a federal issue. Washington State had voting machines for ONE election (and you could choose to use it or the regular "chad" type vote). Now we have mail-in only. Change it locally if it's a concern (& yes it should be)

@JPZ

Also read @pluralistic 's article on how the Democratic party chooses their candidates (I'll find the link in a minute). You have zero choice. Voting is such theater.

Fun story: That happened to be one of the very few years I voted. The guy in charge was Ken on showing off the machine & getting people to use it. I let him show it off to me then I turned to him and asked where the machine spent the night the night before. He gleefully answered "in my living room!" I blinked and...

...bit my tongue till it bled, politely declining to use the glaring unsecure machine and started marking a regular voting card.

BTW, EITHER party could go get the source code...

Personally I don't trust either party. Change your voting method locally. I honestly can't believe people still allow machines.

I'm curious about your thoughts on Cory's article.

I showed a very Democrat friend of mine and she was horrified/shocked. She had no idea.

If there's no response, I think the person didn't actually read it.

@juliewebgirl Sorry, I’m also working right now and it’s cold here and took the dog on a walk. I did read it, and yes! That’s also very true! We are all taught that we have a choice, and we don’t. But we DO have a choice between one person over another. Anyone that says 🎺Dumpster is in any way a better person than Biden, regardless of who got him in that seat (besides the decades of service, sure the D’s are out of touch) can F right the F off.

No problem, sorry if I sounded like I was rushing you 😊 I think you're in the Seattle area too? So freaking COLD out! Yeah it amazes me how people always say they don't have a choice. You always have a choice but you may not always like the other option lol We'll get through the next 4 years just like we got through the last 4 years and the 4 years before that. Though I really wish one of them would deal with Covid and bird flu properly. 🤷‍♀️

Ah, also cold. Who are "they" anyway, that are saying this? I just think people tend to freak out and jump to far out conclusions.

I've been watching this fear of "round them up and put them in concentration camps since the turn of the century... since 9/11 anyway.

😱 Look! There are shipping containers! There are chain link pens fenced off!

And it's compelling. Each time I think hmm maybe... But 🤷‍♀️ hasn't happened so I'm not super concerned unless some new actual evidence shows up.

@juliewebgirl It's Trump's own people saying these things. I'd prefer to believe them this time around, considering he knows SCOTUS has his back, and that he can ultimately do whatever the hell he wants with no repercussions at all. The first time around was his walk thru, now he knows what to do to do these things.

Ah. Honestly wasn't clear on just who you were worried about getting rounded up. I don't know Chicago or Illinois laws but Washington has some laws in place (sidenote: also a new executive order regarding reproductive health by the new governor) that I'm not super worried about it here anyway.

@juliewebgirl The whole thing about being worried about being rounded up:

This in and of itself causes chaos. Stokes fear. Putting people in charge that will only threaten people, his second time around, doesn't make sense. He's going to tell these eveil people to follow through because he knows he can't go to jail for .... anything? So, yeah. I worry people are just going to shoot each other here even more than they do already.

@JPZ

It's not him that needs to obey the law. The article goes into it a little bit:

"Washington state's sanctuary state law, called the Keep Washington Working Act, largely prevents local police from assisting federal authorities with civil immigration enforcement."

"...banned local police from detaining people based on civil immigration warrants and barred police officers from asking about a person's immigration status in noncriminal cases."

"The law also cracked down on information sharing between state, local and federal agencies."

"Seattle, like other cities, must follow that state law — although the city passed its own ordinance in 2003 restricting police officers from asking about people's immigration status."

"Sheriff Clay Myers of Kittitas County — where Trump won about 55% of the vote last month — recently posted on Facebook that his agency "will not take enforcement action based on immigration or alien status."

The president doesn't fire the sheriff. I don't know. Too much paranoia here. I'm trying to have a conversation but you're acknowledging nothing that I've said, not even oh yeah Chicago is different from Seattle. I dunno what more to say except take care of yourself. Stress kills more people than guns. (And Covid kills more & quite frankly is way more of a danger that nobody wants to address especially any POTUS that's been or will be in office /rant)

May we live in not interesting times.

Can you clarify for me who you mean when you say "He's going to tell these evil people to follow through..."

I agree about the chaos but that happens if local government isn't proactive and feeds into the chaos. I can tell just by the tone of the two articles we're looking at. The article you linked to gave me anxiety and I don't even live there nor am I at risk. The one I linked, goes through some valid reassurances.

I dunno.

@juliewebgirl I suppose I'd probably be generally more laid back if I lived in the PNW, too. Just as some things tend to make sense in some places, other things get turned upside down elsewhere. I feel like some of IL's leaders right now are pretty smart, but in a losing situation. And all that's been on the local news lately is talk of how torturous they'll be when they go door to door looking for "Illegal Immigrants". (1/2)

@JPZ

Politically, the PNW is not Washington State. Idaho is home of the skinheads and Oregon is where the Bundy standoff was. To be fair, anything east of the mountains in Washington is red too but it's farmland and I just don't think turning people in to immigration would be something they would do because who the hell would they get to work the fields.

Sounds like your media is trying to get everyone worked up. This is why I don't watch the news.
