This article about return to work mandates is ridiculous and biased - they interview bosses who say that they have "a nagging feeling" that remote working isn't effective and is "not doing proper work", i.e. zero evidence basis.

It would be like me saying that I'm more productive when I'm 100% remote (which I am), therefore no one should go into the office.

@pwaring I've WFH for nearly 7 years now, after working in an office for decades before that. Some days aren't as productive as they should be, but I'm not convinced where I am has any bearing on that.

Much prefer no commute and better ergonomics of my own office. On balance I think companies get more from WFH employees than on site ones, so I'm constantly perplexed by the stupid return to office mandates...

@pwaring I have a nagging feeling that when elite business leaders say "productive" they mean "I can see someone being in the office", not something that actually has a benefit for the company and its customers. The bosses are just too used to using a proxy metric like attendance for something they don't know how to measure.

@pwaring As I'm sure most people will be aware, most of the bosses making the decisions about return to office are extraverts who need the constant presence of other people, including the need to press the flesh, in order to function (or have their own office and keep the door shut). Some of us can't concentrate in an office environment.

Also, something happened in the UK in 2020 which reduced business productivity ever since, and it wasn't working from home.

@pwaring Apologies for the literal ad hominem argument, but for this colonial, "Lord Rose" may as well be named "Mr. Archaic Rentier"
