This is a potluck.

It's increasingly clear that a lot of commercial social platforms are like restaurants that feed you for free in exchange for you allowing yourself to be manipulated. On mastodon we share the costs for our server. It's usually a fairly low cost per person, say $2/mo*, and on an honour basis. The payoff is no ads and no large scale manipulation**

Some of us can't pay that cost due to poverty (induced by a lot of different things). Coincidentally it's usually these people who makes this place the goofy and informative place it is - because they have time to to write stuff about whatever's their passion.

So if you can I suggest pay your piece of server cost +1. That'll cover another goof, and still be an affordable sum. Oh, and bring your own goofiness* - this is a party!

(*My own is C-drama comments, DIY, comics, and cats)
