again I am stressing that swift water is a fucking horror show, you cannot save someone from a hydraulic and you will die trying, every time.

I'm sort of surprised we survived kayaking / swimming down rivers as kids, entirely absent adult supervision. I suspect none of the "rapids" we encountered were in fact fast-moving enough to create conditions like these
