Ok serious question to #Jira users. I find using it throughout the day strains and exhausts my brain due to the numerous links, UI features. And when I switch from one tab to another, especially to a Jira page, I suddenly forget what I am supposed to do on the Jira page. How do you all manage this??
Or is it just me??

@cursedsql alternatives that are worse than Jira? Almost afraid to ask what they are lol

@liztai I wrote one in perl in 2006, used ones like Eventum, Gemini, and then some "Forges" which are basically more dev focused

@liztai I've used it for a long time and IMO it's become something that is a useful and valuable kernel deeply buried under endless layers of ossified middle-management excreta.
It's become a self-justifying everything tool, a management surveillance enabler, cost attribution framework and a massive chore to use.

@liztai Iโve thankfully used Jira for only a few years, but to me the secret is to hide almost all the fields except the ones I use all the time. There are dozens of fields I never care about.

@drahardja oh hehe why didn't I think if that. I wish they'd roll out a minimalist zen version of Jira or something

@liztai I feel the same thing happened to Bugzilla (remember that?) It started out simple, then accreted an unholy number of fields until it became unusable.

@drahardja I feel like I'm like lucky not to know Bugzilla lol

@woolie @rhelune @liztai It would be last on any list of any length. It is a truly awful tool. So is everything else Atlassian makes.

@veronica @woolie @liztai agree! Got rid of Jira but am forced to use Confluence ๐ซ

@veronica @rhelune @liztai at least Jira isnโt as bad as Teams. ๐คฃ

@woolie oddly I prefer teams but then again my team didn't use any project management apps on teams lol @veronica @rhelune

@liztai @veronica @rhelune you prefer teams over Jira or over hot pokers in the eyes?

@woolie I don't know lemme think for a sec ๐ @veronica @rhelune

@liztai The way Jira is usually used is extremely bad. Itโs a specialist tool with (too) many features, a good PM should be able to use a subset of those effectively, but a non-PM worker should preferably be only exposed to an absolute minimum of them by default. Jira doesnโt have any such UI build in though, and most PMs donโt notice how complex it is, so you end up being expected to do PM work in the middle of just trying to do your job โ almost anyone would lose focus with so much significant context switching, itโs definitely not just you.
Best solution would be for management to understand how to use Jira, but thatโs hard (and Jira doesnโt make it easier). More practical workarounds are to minimize how much you interact with it, just write the absolute minimum in the tickets, set that you are working on them, and donโt touch any of the other features. Management will probably complain that โthis ticket is not correctly assignedโ or somesuch, but crucially they will now be talking about tickets that are already done. :blobfoxmlem:
