@purplepadma@beige.party I was personally impacted by Matt mullenweg’s increasing transphobia towards transfeminine individuals and his moderation mishaps. I migrated here, I was upset at the fact I lost my community, the people I cared about and so on. It felt very real to me. The problem with this is that in comparison to what refugees have to experience that is only a sliver. I had the real world, I had ways of communicating to my tumblr friends off platform through discord, cohost and other spaces. To put it in perspective - refugees do not have an escape. From where they come from their family may not have a cellphone. something we all take for granted today. Even if they did, it may not be feasible to take a phone with you on the journey, and when we get into international calls… there’s a very real chance that refugees say a final good bye to their families under the assumption they will never see each other again. Families get split apart during the journey, and it’s a one way street.

I could have made another tumblr account and tried to reunite with people. Refugees don’t have the opportunity to go back, not for years to decades after the fact. When they do go back there might be nothing to return to. The experience a refugee has a difference in several orders of magnitude to what someone who was kicked off of Twitter and went to bluesky has experienced. It is not the same thing, it’s still a hard to process thing but it is nowhere near the same. I didn’t have to navigate a foreign country, learn the laws, the currency, live there for years in low paying jobs that exploit refugees who can’t find work elsewhere. To make someone’s experience as a refugee a "meme" or to "joke" about the hardships refugees face is well to put it lightly disrespectful.
