It would make so much sense to place a turret on a battelmech, but apparently that violates the constraints of the setting.
Come to think of it, it's actually really hard to believe that a battlemech would be operated by one single person. A main battle tank in the real world is crewed by three to five people. So why would a battlemech, which is a far more complex machine, be able to be operated by a single pilot?

@hazelnot I wouldn't say it's a very hard sim. It's definitely more clunky than a first person shooter and building and managing mechs is a huge part of it. But most of the gameplay is "walk around and shoot stuff til it explodes"
I would recommend Mechwarrior 5 Clans as an entry point. That one came out in October and is very linear and story-focused. But it also runs on shit on most even recent PCs
You can also try Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries for the unlimited sandbox play. Install a million mods. Go absolute hog mode with it
