Toot

My commitment to the open web, which I really believe in, and my opposition to aggressive scrapers and harvesting for AI, are in contradiction, I think, and I don't know how to resolve it. Suggestions welcome.

@stephen open web (to me) means open standards, not a free-for-all content-wise. like how transparency leads to better security?

interoperability includes making the limits and boundaries explicit, and enforcing them.

@stephen google requiring js interpretation is bonkers, but only ‘closed’ if they are not using some stable API to do so, or obfuscating results by encrypting them or something.

@stephen Some good answers already, but for me the difference is consent. In the open web, consent is freely given by authors and creators. AI and scrapers do not seek consent and even ignore when it is revoked.
