My current gallery⁰ is driven by https://files.gallery/. It's paid, but it's cheap, and really good. But phone support is ... meh. So I'm looking for a web gallery when at worst I can change the layout system, but what I'm also interested in is a good phone support via a simple app, also preferably installable via #FDroid. Maybe also if it makes a good local cache. Does #immich or any other¹ cover this? Let's see!

¹ Suggestions accepted. Boosts too.

Yo! #Immich uses 114.4MiB of disk space!

But.

I seems to do exactly what I want. I will probably have to do some gluing to be able to import my gallery as it is (which is mostly based on on-disk tree, #Digikam and hard links). I see a blog post brewing. (I hope) new soon.

"My name is Alex. I am an Electrical Engineer by schooling". This does not bode well... I have used software designed by Communication Engineers and by Scientists (but specific for their domains) and boy, then don't fit well in my Computer Person brain...

RAM: Minimum 4GB, recommended 6GB.

CPU: Minimum 2 cores, recommended 4 cores.

That's a lot. I hope my gallery does not really require so much HW. Not that I don't have it (my 13yo laptop has more than that), but it will be sharing it with some other apps, hopefully also with map rendering.

"The Postgres database files are typically between 1-3 GB in size". This starts looking less and less promising. Will do a first run on a VM. Will take the opportunity to setup my #Ansible dev VM/LDX container/whatever. Yes, I'm already yak shaving :)

"Immich requires Docker with the Docker Compose plugin". 'Requires'? No bare metal option? Oh-oh...

⚠️ The project is under very active development.

⚠️ Expect bugs and breaking changes.

⚠️ Do not use the app as the only way to store your photos and videos.

Yikes...

So... #Immich is a few docker containers in a trench coat, and it's going to take me more than a afternoon firing with half the pistons¹ (the other half taking care of mi kids) to untangle it...

¹ yes, in the era and future of EVs, this metaphor will be lees and less relevant. It's for the new generations to find a new one.

It depends on a version of docker that includes the compose plugin, not the docker-compose tool, and that version seems to be newer than the one Debian stable has. Dist-upgrading to testing...

Last night something happened, the VM stopped responding and I went to bed. This morning I completely reinstalled it, and used podman-compose instead. HT https://mastodon.social/@rompe The thing take a looong while to download docker images, start, and the download the models for the ML system. More details later.

I imported a single image and I created one album and attached that image to it. I think that based on the Storage Template and the Album features, I could make it do what I want. But it also has a lot of features I don't want, like Likes, different users, ML for recognizing objects and a map (based on #OpenStreetMap, but with their own tile style, I wonder why); which is a good thing, but would require more time that I want to spend.

Next?

Next is #LibrePhotos + #UhuruPhotos. No app in #FDroid, but at least is has 0 trackers. Both demos servers are currently down, and as I already have one tool installed via docker, I can as easily install another. So point for #Docker.

This time it seems that's going to be the other way around: the docker compose file is in the old (v1) format, so podman-compose barfs. Debian stable's old docker-compose is happy this time. Instructions also made me clone the whole repo when I actually just need the compose and env files.

Ok, so far #LibrePhotos + #UhuruPhotos looks promising, but I ran out of time. Maybe I will try some more later, tonight.
