TikTok wasn't preferred because it's For You was better than Reels or Shorts. No, it was because TikTok made it much easier and more fun to create both original and reaction videos.

Yes, the massive marketing campaign Bytedance launched to drive its growth mattered. Obviously it did. But no app developer spends marketing on an app that can't grow organically.

TikTok just simply was, and as far as I can tell, still is a better product for the people who make its content. With the competitors, you'd need to create the clips elsewhere to upload.
