Experimenting with Mojeek, and I am happy to have found it, but also dismayed how the Web got so messed up that it is now remarkable for a search engine to help you find the thing you are looking for.

@TiroTypeworks Better than DuckDuckGo or just different?

@kentlew Better, I think.

During a discussion at Face/Interface, I went in search of my parody of Borgesian typeface classification, which I knew was posted online in a few places. Neither Google Search nor DuckDuckGo produced it in the top results for

Borges Hudson Typeface Classification

Both seemed to zero in on the latter two terms and ignore the first two: producing a large number of irrelevant results about typeface classification that do not mention either Borges or Hudson.

@kentlew DuckDuckGo is great from a privacy perspective, but I think in aggregating results from multiple indexes it is inheriting some of the problems with those. So far as I can tell, Mojeek is using only its own index, and feels a lot more like the search of our youth.😜

@TiroTypeworks @kentlew The TypeDrawers page with your comment is at #1 in Google Search if you add quotes around the terms you want to have included ("Borges" "Hudson" Typeface Classification). It’s annoying that such explicitness is required, and I’m all for exploring and supporting alternatives, but I thought it might come in handy when being limited to the Big G.

@fhardwig @kentlew Thanks, Florian. Having to put quotes around a single word in order to ensure it is included in results seems like such a hack. It’s like Google developers saying ‘We know our algorithm broke the usefulness of search, but here is a hack to get it back.’
