It can be a country that you thought was the greatest on earth, but it's unbearable now, and you know it was always headed this way.

Once you have dedicated your identity, your passion, your resources and being to something, it can seem less painful to keep living the lie than to break with the lie and divest from it.
But this is a cruel lie we tell ourselves. Your suffering will be far greater if you ignore what your heart and mind are both telling you to be true.

At the core of this is the illusion of the self. You have melded your sense of self with a toxic group or cause. You feel like dropping your allegiance to that thing would mean losing yourself.
My friend, you have no more self than a stream. You are never the same self from moment to moment. The changes may take years to be noticeable but they add up.

And every decision you make will decide what that stream will become. Will it erode into some vein of salt and become poison to everything that lives in it? Or will it flow through fertile fields and teem with life?
Do not simply flow to your ruin and misery if you know you can do better.

And I think now, of all times, this is where we find ourselves. Illusions are shattered. Institutions and systems and countries have shown themselves unworthy of your loyalty. But many people are so invested that they can't bring themselves to let go. They invent reasons to keep supporting evil.

Because they invested themselves in things like capitalism, or America, or Christian Nationalism. And in their hearts and minds they know it's only going to end in pain but they're afraid of the pain of letting go of those things as a part of themselves. They find they're stuck on that attachment.

Letting go of something you once saw good in, built your identity around, is hard. But it's also the best thing you can do for yourself and for the world. Because when you realize you are bigger than all that rigamarole, you become bigger and more powerful than all the evil in the world.

To stand on your own, without devoting any more time or energy or lip service to evil, that is the path of the strong. That is the path of the good. That is the path that will be difficult and painful, for sure, but you will save yourself and others so much pain for that.
