In some ways it was hard to escape. The US are so young than they had no antibodies to recognize fascism when it knocked at their door, so young that they've never experienced knowing they're not the center of the world.. even now they use "un-American" as a synonym for bad! The whole system is unable to deal with any kind of homegrown threat because only external things can be dealt with as bad.

Countries with an older sense of identity aren't immune to bad politics of course. But a country that gotten rid of like 3 dictators knows what an apprentice dictator looks like and isn't likely to give him a second try, and a country that has made obvious, 100% self inflicted mistakes doesn't use itself as a synonym for "perfection, freedom, and everything good"
